המחלקה לטיפול מיוחד ביילוד ובפג The Neonatal Intensive Care Department

THE NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE DEPARTMENT

The Neonatal Intensive Care Department at the Barzilai Medical Center has 40 level II beds (nursery) and 17 level III beds (NICU). It was designed to serve 3000 deliveries per year. Since 1970, the number of deliveries has been increasing by 15% and is expected to reach 4,500 deliveries per year within this decade. A national plan for 60 level II and 25 level III beds has been planned.

Our medical team includes 3 certified Neonatologists, 1-2 residents and 1-2 general physicians. We also have 24 NICU nurses and 35 nurses who practice the "Rooming-In" method in the Obstetric department and the Nursery.

The NIC dep. is capable to support all the needs of the newborn as well as preterm infants. Around 50 preterm infants less than 1,500 grams are born in our center each year and their morbidity and mortality are consistently lower than the national average (according to our national database for babies born under 1,500 gram since 1990).

The NIC department is unsheltered and during the last rocket attacks, February-March 2008, we had to evacuate our department and move to a nearby shelter under difficult conditions (two of the infants were Palestinian preterm twins from Gaza).

The local and national plan is to build a new modern sheltered and gas protected Neonatal Intensive Care Department. The department will be designed to meet the significant progress in medical technology and treatment for preterm babies and the continuous growth of the deliveries in our district. We also hope and prepare ourselves to continue be the referral center for our Palestinian neighbors when peace will come.

We need to raise 2.5 million dollars for this project. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
