The Oncology Institute
The Oncology institute at the Barzilai Medical Center was founded in February 1993. Till that time only a small number of cancer patients was treated at the Barzilai Medical Center. Oncology consultants were called from different medical center for treatment protocol decisions and follow-up.
Since its foundation, the number of cancer patients treated at the Oncology institute grew exponentially rising to annual visits exceeding 5000.
The building of the Oncology institute was enlarged and redesigned during the years mostly with the generous help of the Israel Cancer Association, but it is still small to provide comfortable treatment and waiting areas. There is no room for family members to sit next to the patient and entertain him during chemotherapy and no privacy for those patients who feel sick and vomit during chemotherapy. Such incidences have usually bad psychological influence on other patients. Patients who receive IV fluids are obligated to wait for their turn to use the only toilet in the institute. One must remember that more than 70% of the patients are old aged new immigrants.
The Oncology staff is very devoted to the patients and does his best to alleviate pressure make the chemotherapy easier. Patients are highly satisfied with the staff's attitude and medical treatment despite the condition of the institute.
The Oncology institute is very active in clinical research. Fifteen multicenter clinical studies with new cancer drugs and two local studies on cancer genetics are conducted simultaneously in the institute.
Cancer patients deserve better conditions. The Oncology institute is supposed to offer privacy, comfortable environment and enough space for family members to stay beside their beloved. Large space will allow the staff to offer other activities to cheer the patients like holistic medicine and occupational therapy. The Oncology institute must be enlarged and renovated for the sake of cancer patients.
Help our patients to conquer the cancer.
The estimated cost of the project is 600,000 US Dollars.
Donations will be greatly appreciated.
