October 7th

The spirit of human being cannot be defined, characterized or quantified but it is alive in every one of us and it comes up in certain times of our life.

On Saturday October 7, this spirit was cracked. It cracked upon hearing unanswered sounds of help from the protected spaces inside the houses. It cracked upon seeing the horrible sights of injured people flooding the corridors of the Barzilai hospital.

What remains in the human being after the spirit being cracked?

Since that Saturday the spirit began to blow between the corridors of the hospital for two reasons: the devotion to the medical profession and the professionalism of the medical staff. The devotion to save lives threw us out of our beds and run to the hospital, and the professionalism allowed us to offer excellent care to the injured even that our spirit was cracked. During those minutes you work like a robot. Meanwhile the cracked and broken spirit begins to recover. It started on Saturday with saving the sight of an 8-year-old boy from Netiv Ha'assara who saw his father murdered in front of him and heard how his brother was murdered on the beach of Ziqim, and continued as we treated soldiers to save their sight. Miraculously, the spirit of the injured soldiers empowered the spirit of the medical team that began to rehabilitate.

The human spirit inside each one of us does stand-alone. There are moments in our life, like those on Saturday, when you as a doctor, discover that your mission is to take care of the human being and the understanding that your training to be professional is required so that the spirit can learn to make a restart and never stops even in those very difficult situations.
