Description of the department and activity
The geriatric department has been renewed .
The 36-beds geriatric department is specially designed to meet the multiple needs of the geriatric population over 65 years of age. Most of these patients suffer from multiple chronic diseases and are in need of a multi-disciplinary team who can take care of the patient conditions: physical, functional, psychological and social.
Patients are admitted directly from the emergency department or transferred from other departments. Beside treatment of the medical problem, patients get assessment of their functional and cognitive abilities in order to have the patient return to his basic state. This assessment is done on a multi-professional meeting including physiotherapist, social worker, occupational therapist and nutritionist. In certain cases, and after having informed consent from the patient and/or his custodian.
Academic Activity
The Scientific Council of the Israel Medical Association and the Ministry of Health authorized the Geriatric department for full residency program in geriatric medicine. The department serves also as a place for training of caregivers.
