Friday 30/07/2010 – Around 08:30 the alarms were heard again in Ashkelon. A loud sound of explosion was well heard and a Grad fall has been noticed in Ashkelon.

17 mildly injured persons were brought to the Barzilai Medical Center, one of them fell while running to a shelter and hurt his leg. All patients are being treated in the emergency department and accordingly the physicians will decide to admit or discharge them.

The Barzilai Medical Center and the emergency department staff are well trained with such situations. Surgeons, psychiatrists and social workers were called immediately to the Ed to take care of the patients.


 

Thursday 03/18/2010 – 11:40 A labor worker from Thailand died after being critically injured by a Qassam rocket fired from Gaza towards the village Netiv Ha'asara. The scenes of casualties suffering from acute stress reaction approaching the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center have returned. 4 casualties that turned into the Emergency Department were examined by the professional and well trained multi-disciplinary team of the ED and were home discharged at the end of the treatment. 


  Monday 08/24/2009 - 18:24 : After a long period of silence, the sound of a Qassam missile launched to the south of Ashkelon was heard again. The missile exploded in Kibbutz Ziqim. One mildly injured soldier was evacuated to the Emergency Department of the Barzilai Medical Center. He was injured in his head. A CT scan was done and the soldier was admitted to the surgical department for further investigations.


Tuesday 02/03/2009 – 15:00: A loud sound of alert siren was heard in Ashkelon at 07:10 followed by the sound of explosion that alarmed the morning tranquility of the city that tries to return to routine life. A grad rocket was launched at Ashkelon and 14 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, among them one injured man was injured while running for shelter and another one suffering from chest pain. All casualties were examined and treated by the multi-disciplinary team of the Emergency Department and were home discharged at the end of the treatment.


Sunday 01/18/2009 – 16:35: A day after the declaration of cease-fire. Rocket attacks on the south continue even after the Hamas declared cease-fire. 13 casualties from latest attacks were evacuated to Barzilai medical Center among them 8 people suffering from acute stress reaction. All casualties were treated by the multi-disciplinary team of the Emergency Department.



Saturday 01/17/2009 – From late Friday evening hours to the end of the Sabbath rocket attacks on citizens of the south continued incessantly, although Israel declared unilateral cease fire. 39 casualties among them 21 suffering acute stress reaction and 19 suffering mild injuries were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center and were treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the ED. Some of the casualties were hospitalized for further observation and the others were home discharged.

 


Friday 01/16/2009 – 16:20: After a relative quiet morning "red color" alerts were heard in Ashkelon, Ashdod, Kiryat Gat and Beer Sheva. 28 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, among them 9 suffering from acute stress reaction and 19 suffering from mild injuries mainly caused following a fall while running for shelter. They were all treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the ED.


Thursday 01/15/2009 – 17:26: rockets continue to launch on Sderot since morning hours and sirens broke the pseudo silence in Ashkelon. 5 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center. One house in Sderot suffered a direct hit and 2 casualties were evacuated to the ED and in Ashkelon 3 people suffered mild injuries while falling when seeking shelter. All casualties were treated by the multi-disciplinary team of the ED.

 



Tuesday 01/13/2009 – 24:00: A calm morning in Ashkelon came to an end at afternoon hours when a Grad rocket was launched on the city landing near an educational institution but luckily did not explode. Citizens who heard the rocket fall were got panic although the rocket did not explode. 16 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, 4 of them suffering from acute stress reaction and 12 people suffering from injuries caused by falls when seeking shelter. They were all treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the Emergency Department.

Monday 01/12/2009 – 16:00: The morning emerged peacefully but during the humanitarian paused that was declared by IDF a Grad rocket was launched on Ashkelon and stroke a house in the city. 11 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, most of them suffering from acute stress reaction. They were all treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the ED and were home discharged.


Sunday 01/11/2009 – 16:30: After a quiet night the rocket attacks over the cities in the south, Ashkelon, Ashdod and Sderot were resumed. Since morning hours 11 casualties suffering from acute stress reaction were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center. they were all treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the ED.


Saturday 01/10/2009 – 17:25: Following a quiet night for the people in the southern region, during noon hours a serial of alarms broke the Shabbat silence. 43 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, 25 suffering from acute stress reaction, one casualty suffering medium injuries and all others from mild injuries. Among the casualties was a child, 7 years old, who was injured while running and seeking shelter. All casualties were treated by the teams of the Emergency Department that stand on alert 24 hours a day and include reinforced teams of nurses, physicians, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. In addition 4 soldiers from the fighting zone were treated in the ED.


Friday 01/09/2009 – 17:00: After a quiet night the rocket attacks over the cities in the south, Ashkelon, Ashdod and Sderot were resumed. 10 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center including 1 casualty suffering from acute stress reaction and 9 casualties suffering from mild injuries that were acquired while trying to seek shelter during "Red Color" alarms. All casualties were treated by the dedicated teams of the Emergency Department, the social workers and the Psychiatry team that is stationed in the ED. In addition the medical center continues to treat wounded soldiers from the fighting zone in Gaza.


Thursday 01/08/2009 – 24:00: Rocket attacks over Ashkelon were resumed at late night hours and continued more intensely during the day. Since the morning 21 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, 8 of them suffered from acute stress reaction, 12 casualties with mild injuries occurring while running for shelter during the alarms and one patient that was treated by an Internal physician. All casualties were treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the ED.



Wednesday 01/07/2009 – 12:00: Since morning hours rockets are launched at Ashkelon. 8 patients with acute stress reaction were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center. they were treated by the dedicated multi-functional teams of the ED and were home discharged after a short while.

Monday 01/05/2009 – 22:00: Since morning hours rocket attacks were resumed over Ashkelon and Sderot. 22 casualties approached the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center of which 10 suffered from mild injuries and 5 from acute stress reaction. They were all treated by the multi-disciplinary team in the shielded Emergency Department.

Sunday 01/04/2009 – 11:45: During the morning rockets continued to launch on Sderot. 8 casualties were evacuated to the shielded Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, of which 3 suffer from acute stress reaction and 5 suffer from mild injuries. All casualties are treated at the ED and it will be decided soon whether to discharge them or admit them for further observation.



Sunday 01/04/2009 – 08:11: Ground incursion into Gaza Strip has begun on Saturday evening. Barzilai Medical Center is on full alert in view of possible rocket attacks on Ashkelon and the areas around the city. 4 IDF soldiers, mildly injured were evacuated to the medical center and were treated by the hospital medical teams.


Saturday 01/03/2009 – 18:00: At late morning hours rocket launched on Ashkelon. Since the morning 3 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center of which 2 suffered from acute stress reaction and one suffers from mild injury caused by a fall while running for shelter. All casualties were treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the Emergency Department that is always ready and steady to treat casualties approaching and evacuating to Barzilai Medical Center.



Friday 01/02/2009 –
18:00: Rockets were launched all day long over the city of Ashkelon. Since early morning hours until evening 28 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency department at Barzilai Medical Center of which 15 were diagnosed as suffering from acute stress reaction and the others suffer mild injuries, some of which were caused while falling during running for shelter. All patients were treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the Emergency Department, teams that include physicians and nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers.

Thursday 01/01/2009 – 21:15: The first day of the New Year began relatively peacefully but at late morning hours the sound of alarms broke the quiet and calm environment while rocket attacks over Ashkelon and Ashdod were renewed. 15 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, some suffer mild injuries while seeking shelter and the others suffer from acute stress reaction. All casualties were treated by the multi-disciplinary team


Wednesday 12/31/2008 – 11:30: Following rockets launched on Ashkelon 7 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center. Two casualties suffer from mild shrapnel injuries and five people, including one child, suffer from acute stress reaction. All casualties are treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the Emergency Department and it will be soon decided whether to discharge them or admit them for further observation.



Tuesday 12/30/2008 –
22:00: During the evening the rocket attack shooting over Ashkelon was renewed. 18 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center. Two people suffered mild injuries, one of them from rocket shrapnel and a woman that was injured while seeking shelter. The others suffered from acute stress reaction. All casualties were treated by the multi-disciplinary teams at the Emergency Department and accordingly it was decided whether to discharge them or admit them for further observation.


Monday 12/29/2008 – 23:00: At evening hours the rocket attacks over Ashkelon was renewed. 8 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center following a rocket that launched in the middle of the city. They are treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the ED and accordingly it will be decided whether to discharge them or keep them for further observation. Since morning hours 42 casualties were evacuated to Barzilai Medical Center, most of them suffering from acute stress reaction.


Monday 12/29/2009: The rocket attack shooting on Ashkelon began at morning hours. Until now 32 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, 4 of them suffering a variety of organ injuries and the others suffering from acute stress reaction. All patients were treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the ED. 22 patients were already discharged and soon it will be decided whether to discharge or admit the others according to their condition. The Medical Center operates under emergency standard. All patients that could be discharged were sent home. All the departments that are not shielded were transferred to shielded admission spaces, including the Emergency Department that was moved to a shielded cellar.


Sunday 12/28/2008 – 13:20: The Rocket attacks shooting on Ashkelon, the settlements in Gaza District and the south of the country continues since morning hours. Following a rocket that hit the city of Ashkelon 11 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center. Two people suffer mild shrapnel injuries and the others suffer from acute stress reaction. All casualties are treated by the multi-disciplinary teams of the Emergency Department and according to their condition it will be decided whether to discharge them or admit them for further observation.


Saturday 12/27/2008 – 17:15: Barzilai Medical Center operates under emergency standard. All patients under condition that enables discharging were discharged. All unshielded departments were transferred to shielded spaces. The emergency Department was transferred to shielded area at the cellar of the admission building. Following the rocket attack on Ashkelon three casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department, one of them suffering from injuries while running and seeking shelter and the other two suffer from acute stress reaction.


Wednesday 12/24/2008 – 14:00: Since early morning hours massive rocket shooting to the areas of the Eshkol, Sha'ar Hanegev and Sdot Negev local councils as well as the City of Ashkelon. 26 casualties including children were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center, suffering from acute stress reaction. They were all treated by the multi-disciplinary teams at the ED.

Friday 11/14/2008 – Since early morning hours seven Qassam rockets were launched to Sderot. One of the rockets hit an electricity pole and as a result an eighty years old woman was mildly injured from shrapnel, a man complained having of chest pain and a forty years old man complained of suffering from blast injuries of the ears. All of them are now treated by the multi-disciplinary team of the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center and it will be later decided whether to keep them for further observation or discharge them at the end of the treatment.
Update: 13:30 – Following rocket attack to the city of Ashkelon 15 injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai Medical Center. two of them were injured while running and seeking shelter during the "Red Color" alert. All injured people are now been treated by the multi-disciplinary team of the emergency department and according to their condition it will be decided whether to discharge them or to admit them for further observation.


 Wednesday November 05, 2008 – during the night, as IDF forces were fighting inside Gaza Strip, the Barzilai Medical Center alert systems were raised. During the night a Palestinian woman suffering from gunshot wounds was treated at Barzilai Medical Center and at 7:00 am Qassam rockets were launched to the area surrounding Gaza district and Ashkelon. Five people suffering from stress reaction were treated in the Emergency department at Barzilai Medical Center and were home discharged after receiving treatment from the multi-disciplinary team of the ED.


Sunday 09/14/2008 - 17:30 : After a long and relatively quiet period, the Palestinians renewed their bombing on Israel. A Qassam rocket was launched to the city of Sderot. The rocket exploded in one of the neighborhoods of Sderot. A 16 year old boy was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center at 18:26. He fell while running to seek a shelter. On admission to the ED, he showed signs of anxiety and complained of hearing disorder and pain in his leg. His condition is defined as mild and he is getting treatment by a multi-disciplinary team in the ED. Probably he will be discharged home within the next few hours. It is to be emphasized that the boy suffered a Qassam injury to his leg in the past and today he fell on the injured leg.


Thursday 07/24/2008 – 13:00 : A.T. a construction worker from Kiryat Gat who was working in construction in Kibbutz Nir Yizhak reported that he was attacked from behind by a Palestinian worker who was working in a nearby building. A.T reported that the attacker used a hammer and hit him on his head, neck and limbs. After the attack the assaulter ran away. 

A.T. was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center fully consciousness with mild injuries of the head, fingers and neck. After first evaluation and stabilization he was taken for CT examination including CT angiography of the head and neck. It turned out that he suffers from fingers fractures and luckily the neck injury did not cause any damage to the arteries or the respiratory tracks. He will be transferred to the Operating Theatre for wound debridement and care of fractures and thereafter to the ENT Department for further observation. At this point he is not in a life threatening condition.


Tuesday 06/24/2008 - 16:24 : The "red color" alarm was once again heard all over Sderot as three Qassam rockets hit the town. One rocket fell in the yard of a house. Three people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. One man complained of upper abdominal pain and hand injury acquired as he fell while seeking a shelter, and the other two injured people suffer from blast injuries of their ears. All three patients are considered mildly injured and are now examined and treated by the multi-disciplinary team of the ED. It will be soon decided whether to discharge or admit them for observation.


Wednesday 06/18/2008 - 18:30 : From early afternoon hours at least 28 Qassam rockets and 10 mortar bombs were fired at the settlements surrounding Gaza district and Ashkelon area. Around 17:00 a house in Sderot was directly hit by a Qassam rocket. Two women were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. One woman fell and injured her leg while seeking a shelter and the other had acute stress reaction. They were both examined and treated by the multi-disciplinary team in the ED and were discharged after few hours.


Monday 06/16/2008 - 15:30 : Two Grad rockets were launched from Gaza district to Ashkelon city. Both landed and exploded in an open space. Two injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. A 38 year old fully conscious man suffered a scalp injury by a shrapnel but CT scan examination revealed intracranial hemorrhage. At these moments the Magen David Adom  EMS is transporting him to the Neurosurgery department at the Soroka hospital for advanced treatment. The second casualty has acute stress reaction and is still treated in the ED. 


Thursday 06/12/2008 - 15:00 : More than 30 mortar bombs and 20 Qassam rockets were fired during the last hour to the settlments surrounding Gaza district and the southern area of Ashkelon. One Grad rocket landed in an open space and one Qassam rocket exploded inside a house in Kibutz Yad Mordechai. At 15:20, a 50 year old woman and a 20 year old girl were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. The woman has shrapnel injuries of the head, neck and shoulder. She is fully conscious and her condition has been defined as moderate on admission. The young girl suffers a blast injury to her ears. The injured woman had CT scan investigation which revealed superficial shrapnels. Her conditon is considered now mild and she is on her way to the operating theatre for wound exploration and debridement. She will be admitted to the hospital later for further observation and treatment. The young girl was examined and discharged home.

Update - 19:20 : Two Palestinian citizens who were working at the Erez border suffered mild injuries from the blast effect of the explosions. The IDF transported them to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center and are now under medical examination. They are complaining of headache and one of them has a mild injury to his mandible.


Friday 06/06/2008 – 13:07 : Four Qassam rockets were launched to the city of Sderot. Some of them landed in the city and some in the periphery. Three mildly injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center at 14:00. Two of the wounded were injured while they rushed to a shelter: a 50 year old man with contusion of the chest and a 3 year old girl with contusion of the chin and lips. The third 24 year old woman suffered blast injury of her ears and complained of severe headache. All the injured are receiving treatment at this moment in the ED.


Friday 06/06/2008 – 07:00 : The fighting in Gaza district is still going on. An IDF soldier was wounded this morning during a military operation in Gaza. The 23 year old soldier was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. He has a gunshot wound of his arm and minor abrasions of the chest. His injury is classified as mild and the doctors say that there is no risk for his life or his arm. He was transferred to the operating theatre for wound debridement. The soldier will be admitted thereafter to the Orthopedics department for further observation and treatment.


Thursday 05/22/2008 - 08:40 : Enormous sound of explosion of a truck full of explosives was heard at 07:00 all over the settlements surrounding Gaza district. The truck exploded at the Palestinian side of the Erez barrier. Terrorists fired mortar bombs and machine guns to the IDF soldiers who were on the Israeli border. Two IDF soldiers were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Both were mildly injured, one had mild blast injury to his ears and and the second complained of headache and dizziness. Both were treated in the ED and discharged to their divisions.


Wednesday 05/21/2008 - 12:38 : Two Qassam rockets that were launched from Gaza district exploded in one of the settlements south to Ashkelon. At 14:00 one IDF soldier was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center for shrapnel injury to his shoulder. His injury was found to be mild and he was released after examination and short treatment in the ED.


Wednesday 05/14/2008 – 17:56 : A Grad rocket was launched from Gaza

to the city of Ashkelon. An enormously loud sound of explosion was heard all over Ashkelon. The rocket hit the Houtsot Mall directly and exploded inside an HMO clinic on the upper floor where many patients were getting treatment. Immediately after hearing the beeper, the Barzilai Medical Center called 160 of his employees. All arrived within 30 minutes.

Up to 22:20, 105 casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Four were severely injured : one is a doctor who was working in the clinic. She was severely injured in her face and was transferred to the operating theatre. A 24 year woman was severely injured in her abdomen and her head with intracranial hemorrhage. Her 2 ½ year old daughter was severely injured in her upper and lower limbs and her head with an intracranial shrapnel. Another woman suffered open injury of abdomen and was rushed to the operating theatre. The rest of the injured suffered mild blunt injuries and acute stress reactions.

The little child and her mother were transferred by the Magen David Adom (EMS) helicopter, after initial stabilization, to the Sheba Medical Center at Tel Hashomer for neurosurgical consultation and treatment. The condition

of both women who were operated has been stabilized.

23:05 : Eleven injured were admitted to the Surgical and Orthopedic departments for further observation and treatment, 74 were discharged and 16 are still receiving treatment in the ED.

Monday 05/12/2008 - 07:00 : The wailing sound of the public alarm system was heard this morning every where in Ashkelon. A Grad rocket, launched from Gaza strip, exploded in one of the southern neighbourhoods of Ashkelon near a synagogue. One casualty was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. He is diagnosed as having acute stress reaction and he is being treated at this moment by a multi-disciplinary team in the ED.


Saturday 05/10/2008 - 18:15 : Seven Qassam rockets were launched since noon from Gaza strip to the western areas of the Negev and the city of Sderot, the last two at 17:05. Five injured were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Three of them have been mildly injured by shrapnels and the other two suffer from acute stress reaction. All the injured are getting treatment by the multi-disciplinary team in the ED.


Saturday 05/10/2008 - 10:15 : Since the early morning hours of this Shabbath nine Qassam rockets had been launched to the city of Sderot. Some of them landed in open spaces causing no damge. However, one Qassam rocket hit one house direclty and exploded causing a lot of damage, and another rocket exploded near a synagogue, again causing a lot of damage to the synagogue. Fortunately, only one young person who absorbed a blast injury to his limbs was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. His injury is classified as mild and he is under treatment in the ED.
Update - 12:30 : Three patients with acute stress reaction have been evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. They are all in good condition and are being treated at this hour by a multi-disciplinary team in the ED.


Friday 05/09/2008 - 20:00 : A bomb was fired from Gaza district and exploded in Kfar Gaza, a settlement south to Ashkelon. One of the citizens who was walking around was hit directly and died on the spot. A young man was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center after being injured by a shrapnel in the pelvis while he was running to the scene. X-ray and CT scan examinations revealed no injury to internal organs and his injury was classified as mild. The patient was transferred to the operating theatre for wound debridement.


Monday 05/05/2008 – 09:01 : At about 09:00 two Qassam rockets hit the ground in open areas of the Eshkol Regional Council. One hour later seven Qassam rockets were fired from Gaza to the city of Sderot. Five people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at Barzilai medical Center suffering from headaches, blast injuries in their ears and acute stress reaction. They were treated by the multi disciplinary team of the ED and were discharged after several hours.

Sunday 05/04/2008 – 15:01 : A Qassam rocket launched from Gaza Strip landed on a supermarket in the middle of Sderot. Luckily the rocket did not penetrate the building. Three people suffering from acute stress reaction were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Two of the patients were discharged after an extensive examination and adequate treatment from the multi disciplinary team of the ED. The third stress reaction patient is still under observation and it will be soon decided whether to discharge or admit her for further observation.


Tuesday 05/01/2008 - 14:15 : Nine Qassam rockets were fired sequentially from Gaza to the city of Sderot, few landed and exploded in Sderot and the rest exploded in open spaces. A 10 year old child was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Bazilai Medical Center with acute stress reaction. She has no physical injuries and a multi-disciplinary team is taking care of her at this hour.


 

Wednesday 04/30/2008 - 18:00 : Qassam rockets were launched to the southern area of Ashkelon. One rocket exploded in one of the settlements (moshav). Two women, one aged 52 and the second 34, were avacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Both were in acute stress but had no physical injuries. They were treated by a multi-disciplinary team and released home afterwards.


 

Tuesday 04/29/2008 - 10:30 : Qassam rockets firing started early this morning. One of the rockets hit a house in Sderot and exploded. Two mildly injured patients were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. One patient fell and hit her head while seeking a shelter during the "red color" alarm. The second suffers a blast injury of her ears and is complainig of abdominal pain. Both are still under investigation in the ED.

Monday 04/28/2008 – 12:30 : Rockets launching to Israel continue as well as the fighting in Gaza. An IDF soldier with a gunshot injury to his forearm was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. His injury was defined as mild. He went through primary investigation at the ED and then was transferred to the operating theatre for wound debridement. The soldier will be admitted to the Orthopedic Department for further care and observation.


 

 

 

Monday 04/28/2008 – 07:30 : Qassam rockets launching to the surrounding area of Gaza strip, Sderot and Ashkelon continues as well as the fighting inside the Gaza Strip. An IDF soldier with a gunshot wound of his leg was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical center. His injury was defined as mild. He was admitted to the Orthopedic Department and later was taken to the operating theatre for wound debridement.


 

 

Monday 04/21/2008 – 17:00 : A Qassam rocket that was fired from Gaza Strip exploded in Kibbutz Gevim. A four years old child was wounded in his chest from a shrapnel and was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. A primary survey at the ED revealed shrapnel that broke one of the child's ribs and caused pulmonary injury. The child was transferred to the operating theatre for debridement. The shrapnel was left in its place and not removed. The child's condition is defined as good and he was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. As for now, the child is not facing any threat for life due to his condition.

 Thursday 04/17/2008 – 03:00 : The sound of the wailing public alarm woke up the residents of Ashkelon at three o'clock in the morning. A Qassam rocket fell in the southern industrial area of Ashkelon. Three women  were injured while seeking for sheltered area. All three women were transferred to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. One of them had a head trauma and the other two had limb injuries. All three were examined in the ED and after a series of x-rays were home released. The Qassam firing continued through Wednesday and on Thursday morning several rockets were shot towards Sderot and the Western Negev area. Nobody was injured.
Update: Two other injured were brought to the Emergency Department. They were both injured while running to sheltered area. One woman fell down and had a chest injury and a young man had a leg injury. They were both treated in the ED and discharged home.


 

Wednesday 04/16/2008 – 08:15 : The fighting in Gaza continues and IDF forces operate in various areas in the strip. A 20 years old soldier with injury to his forearm was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. His injury is classified as mild and he is fully consciousness. After primary survey at the ED the soldier was transferred to the operating theatre for further investigations and damage control.


 

 

Friday 04/04/2008 – 11:00 : The Minister of Public Security, Mr. Avi Dicter, and his entourage patrolled along the border of Gaza Strip and while standing at one of the observation points Hamas terrorists opened fire towards them. It has to be mentioned that many visitors were in the area at that time. One of the bullets hit the minister's chief of bureau and he was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center fully consciousness with an injury to the lower part of his pelvis. His injury is defined as moderate and stable but not life threatening. After a primary survey and imaging he was transferred to the operating theatre for wounds debridement and damage control.  

 

The Minister of Public Security, Mr. Avi Dicter, and the Minister of Religious Services, Rabbi Itzhak Cohen, came to visit him and accompanied him all the way to the operating theatre. His family arrived as well and they are waiting in the waiting area for the operation to end.

Tuesday 04/01/2008 – 12:00 : Bombs that were fired from Gaza Strip toward Nativ Ha'asara, south of Ashkelon, hit two houses and two mildly injured men were rushed to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. One of them suffered a head injury and the other had a laceration of his hand caused by a shrapnel. Both of them are treated in the ER. It is important to emphasize that this is the second time that the house of one of the injured men was hit by a Qassam rocket.


 

 Wednesday 03/23/2008 – 21:47 : Two Qassam rockets landed in Sderot near a commercial center in the city. Eight injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, one of them suffering from a shrapnel injury to his hand, another from a cut in her shoulder and the rest had acute stress reactions. All eight were treated in the ED by the multi-disciplinary staff including physicians, nurses, social workers and psychiatrists. All eight injured people were home released at the end of the treatment.


 

 Thursday 03/06/2008 – 22:40 : Two rockets hit the city of Sderot at 19:07, one of them explded directly in a house causing a fire while the other stroked a gas container causing gas leak. Fourteen injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, one of them suffering injuries to his face and limbs was admitted to the Surgical Department, a woman in her sixties was admitted to the Medical Department for further observation, and two little girls were admitted to the Pediatrics Department, one of them suffering an eye burn from the gas leak. All the others has acute stress reactions. All the injured were treated by the multi-disciplinary team including social workers and psychiatrists.


Monday 03/03/2008 – 08:40 : The day started with a rocket attack on the city of Sderot and at 08:40 two Grad rockets which were fired to Ashkelon hit a multi-story house and a children playground that luckily was empty at that time. Twenty nine injured were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Among them a pregnant woman and a baby, who were discharged after a thorough physical examination in the ED, and two girls, one who injured her leg while seeking shelter upon hearing the "red color" alarm and another who broke her leg. The other casualties were considered as having acute stress reactions, among them 9 school children and two pregnant women. They were all treated by the multi-disciplinary team of the Emergency Department.

Sunday 03/02/2008 – 20:12 : The Qassam rockets attack continues incessantly. A rocket fired at Sderot hit a house directly. Four injured people were rushed to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, some complaining of chest pains and some suffering blast injuries of their ears. They are all classified as mildly injured and at this time are undergoing physical examination at the Emergency Department. At the same time, a flow of stress reaction casualties continue to arrive at the hospital and during the last hour several children who suffer from severe stress reactions were brought to the hospital. They are being treated by pediatricians and pediatric psychiatrics. At the time of this report they are not yet released to their homes.


 

 

Sunday 03/02/2008 – 17:07 : The rocket attack over Ashkelon was renewed and a Grad rocket hit a house in one of the neighborhoods. One girl suffered mild shrapnel injuries to her back and after examination and treatment she was home released. At the same time an IDF soldier was evacuated from the fighting area with a small shrapnel injury of the foot. He was treated by the Emergency Department staff and was home released after extraction of the shrapnel from the wound.


 

 

Sunday 03/02/2008 – 12:00 : Qassam rockets continue to land in the city of Sderot. Four casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, among them a volunteer of Magen David Adom who suffered a blast injury of her ears, a patient with a cut in his face, a patient who suffered from head trauma and another with shrapnel injury of his legs. Three casualties were discharged and the fourth was admitted and operated in order to remove the shrapnel. In addition, another six patients with acute stress reactions from yesterday's events in Sderot were admitted to the ED.
Continue update – up to the hour 15:00 another eleven patients with acute stress reactions were transferred to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, some of them from yesterday's events.


 

Saturday 03/01/2008 – 18:43 : Following the rocket attack twenty-two people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Brazilai Medical Center for treatment, seventeen of them residents of Ashkelon. Four patients had shrapnel injuries, two of whom were moderately injured. One of the injured was rushed to the operating theatre, the second was admitted for observation, the third was admitted with shrapnel in her leg and will be operated later and the fourth was discharged. The rest of patients are being treated for acute stress reactions by the multi-disciplinary team of the medical center. The Barzilai Medical Center announced to the media that it continues with its routine work and fluent activity despite the rockets attacks.


 

Saturday 03/01/2008 – 05:07 : At an early morning hour, a "red color" alarm was heard all over Ashkelon for the first time. Three Grad rockets were fired at the city disturbing the Shabbat tranquility. One of the rockets hit a house directly. Six casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, two children and four adults. Four of the injured had mild shrapnel injuries and two had acute stress reactions. They are now treated by the multi-disciplinary team of the Emergency Department and, according to their condition, it will be decided whether to discharge them or admit them to the hospital for observation.

Friday 02/29/2008 – 11:28 : Two Qassam rockets were launched to Sderot. Seven mild injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, among them a little girl and a 59 years old woman with blast injury. She said that she did not manage to reach the sheltered area and was thrown away from the blast. She suffers from injuries to the head and the neck. All patients are classified as mildly injured and are now been treated in the ED. The child was admitted to the Pediatric Department for observation. In addition, three injured people from yesterday's events in Ashkelon and Sderot arrived at the hospital, one with hand injury. All three are classified as mildly injured and are treated in the Emergency Department.


 

Thursday 02/28/2008 – 18:53 : Two Qassam rockets were launched to Ashkelon. A house was severely damaged by a direct hit but luckily its residents were not at home during the incident. Twenty injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, among them seven children. All the injured people are now being treated by the multi-disciplinary team including social workers and psychiatrists.



Thursday 02/28/2008 – 14:43 : Qassam rockets launching to Sderot, the

 

 

Western Negev area and Ashkelon continue all day long. At 14:43 sounds of rockets blast were heard all around Ashkelon. Within 70 minutes 64 injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, 40 were from Ashkelon and 24 from Sderot. Most of the injured people suffered from acute stress reaction and some from mild injuries.

 

 

 

 

The hospital declared a mass casualty incidence immediately as receiving the message on the event and recruited large scale of forces to absorb and treat the injured people. A separate area for the mildly injured and stress reaction were put into action and later on the hospital activated the family information center. This event occurred after a large drill which took place in the hospital only two days earlier.

Thursday 02/28/2008 – 11:53 : Since the morning hours 10 Qassam rockets were launched to Sderot and Ashkelon area. A young man was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center with mild injuries to the neck and blast injury of the ears. As for now, he is examined in the ED and is expected to be discharged in the next hour.

Wednesday 02/27/2008 – 14:52 : Beginning at this hour and during the next six hours about 50 Qassam rockets were launched to Sderot, the Western Negev area and Ashkelon. One of the rockets exploded directly on a car causing the immediate death of the driver. He was critically injured in the chest and the M.D.A team declared him dead. Another rocket exploded several yards outside the fence of the barzilai medical Center (300 meters away from the ED), luckily in an open area.

Twenty nine injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, 13 were Ashkelon residents and the others from Sderot. The corpse of the dead dirver was also evacuated to the ED. Two of the injured patients were injured by shrapnels : one of them was admitted to the Orthopedic department and was operated for wound debridement and the second was discharged. Eight children and adolescents in the age of 8-16 were treated in the ED by multi-disciplinary teams, most of them suffering from acute stress reactions. Two children were admitted to the Pediatric department for observation. The other casualties had acute stress, chest pain and blast injuries of the ears. Four patients were admitted due to chest pain and the others were released to their homes after examination and treatment by the multi-disciplinary teams. As the flow of casualties increased the Barzilai Medical Center opened additional site to absorb and treat the mildly injured patients and the stress reaction casualties while recruiting staff from their homes.

Monday 02/25/2008 – 13:30 : Qassam rockets launching to Sderot and Ashkelon area continues. Six injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, among them fully conscious 10 years old child with severe musculoskeletal injury of the shoulder and upper arm but with no significant injury to the nerves and blood vessels.

                               

Dr. Boris Yofe, head of the general and vascular surgery department, Dr. Hagar Patish, head of the hand surgery unit and Dr. Rubitski, orthopedics resident, treating the injured child in the trauma unit.

After primary stabilization at the trauma unit of the ED the child was rushed to the operating theatre for evaluation and assessment of the damage. The child was not in a life threatening condition at any time. In addition, a woman and her baby were evacuated to the ED. The mother had blast injury of her ears and the one year old baby did not have any external injuries. Additional acute stress reaction casualties are treated in the ED. Beside the Qassam casualties, an IDF soldier was evacuated to the Emergency Department after being unintentionally hurt in his head by a rubber bullet. The injury was classified as mild and he was admitted to the Surgical department for observation. 



Monday 02/18/2008 – 20:12 : Qassam rockets launching to Sderot and Ashkelon area continues. Several rockets falls were identified in Sderot. Three mildly injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. One woman had chest pain and acute stress reaction and her 12 years old son suffered from stress reaction as well. Another woman was slightly injured while falling during the "red color" alarm. The injured are now being treated in the ED by the multi- disciplinary team and most probably will be discharged.


 

 

Sunday 02/17/2008 – 12:40 : A Qassam rocket launched to Sderot landed in a yard near a kindergarten. Four people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Among them were a pregnant woman in her twenties complaining of abdominal pain and stress, a man and woman in their fifties complaining of chest pain and an IDF soldier who fell down and injured his leg while running for shelter during the "red color" alarm. All four are now under examination in the ED by the multi-disciplinary team and later on the team will decide whether to admit or discharge them.



Wednesday 02/13/2008 – 15:26 : A Qassam rocket launched to Sderot caused direct damage of a house. Four injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, among them a child with blast injury of the ears and acute stress reaction. All injured were treated by the multi-disciplinary teams and discharged to their homes.

Saturday 02/09/2008 – 19:10 : Qassam rockets launching to Sderot and Ashkelon area caused injuries and damages. Five injured people were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, four of them members of one family, a mother and her three sons. They were injured by Qassam rocket that exploded near them as they were crossing the street on their way to seek shelter. The 8 years old child was severely injured in both his legs in addition to chest and hand injuries. His condition is classified as severe and after stabilization and imaging in the trauma unit at the ED he was rushed to the operating theatre.

                                    

 The 19 years guy suffers from fractures in both legs and was transferred to the operating room. The mother and her 15 years old son were treated in the ED for acute stress reaction. Another woman aged 40 fell down the stairs and injured her leg while running for shelter.
Update: at 23:00 two injured people, one with stress reaction and the other with chest pain were evacuated to the ED and are now examined and treated. 


                                


 Friday 02/08/2008 - 21:40 : Ten Qassam rockets were launched to Sderot between 20:20 and 20:49. One rocket hit a house. Eight casualties were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Among the injured were a couple who fell while running for shelter, a pregnant woman who was mildly injured in her hand and is now being examined in the Gynecology department, her husband with a fracture of his hand and is being treated by the orthopedists and another man who suffers from chest pain and is treated by the ED physicians. All other injured people suffer from acute stress reaction. All casualties are classified as mild injuries and some of them will be discharged soon.


 

Friday 02/08/2008 – 12:30 : Since the early morning hours till 12:30, more than 20 Qassam rockets were launched to Sderot and Ashkelon area. Several people with acute stress reaction were treated at the local acute stress disorder center in Sderot. A man in his forties was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center for chest pain and acute stress reaction. He was examined and treated by the multi-disciplinary team and at the end of treatment was discharged.

Thursday 02/07/2008 – 10:30 : The city of Sderot woke up to the sounds of "red color" alarm. About 17 Qassam rockets were launched to the city between 08:08 and 10:30. A woman in her seventies and her 30 year old daughter were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center, the mother suffering from chest pain and the daughter from leg injury. They were both discharged after being treated by a multi-disciplinary team.


 

Tuesday 02/05/2008 – 21:44 : More Qassam rocket were launched to the city of Sderot. One stress casualty without physical injuries was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. His condition is classified as mild.


 

 

Tuesday 02/05/2008 – 08:04 : Once again a "red color" alarm was heard all around the city of Sderot. Several rockets were launched to the city. Several stress reaction casualties were treated in the local acute stress disorder center. One 24 year old injured woman was evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center after fainting. She was treated in the ED and discharged home.


 

 

Saturday 02/02/2008 – 17:25 : Qassam rockets were launched to Sderot, some landed inside and the others outside the city area. At 17:56 two children, one at the age of 9 and the other at the age of 16, were evacuated to the Emergency Department at the Barzilai Medical Center. Both of them complained of tinnitus and one had his leg injured after falling down. They are both examined and treated in the ED. The 9 years old will be discharged and the other one will be also soon home released after completing a series of x-rays.
