Special educational activities of Shaked school at the Oncology Institute
A unique collaboration was established the previous school year between the Oncology Day Care and educational staff at Shaked School.
Under coordination with the Head Nurse, a creative program was designed for patients who need to stay long hours at the outpatient clinic for treatments and therapy.
This was a unique activity, which caused excitement among team and patients who enjoyed the refresh activity. Patients were waiting for the next activity to come and contributed their own ideas and materials for further activities. And while working together great friendship struck up between patients and Shaked School team.
In the current year the cooperation between the Oncology Institute and the school will be extended and it will include a weekly one-hour varied activity. An emphasis will be put on empowering patients by building templates and models by inmates for sick children and thus creating "magic circles" for the benefit of all patients.
As says Ms. Mazal Amoyal, Head Nurse of the Oncology Institute:
"The activity contributes to the welfare of patients, lessen concerns and increase faith in the ability to cope. In addition, partnerships and closer communications are formed between patients and it creates a sense of" togetherness" as a source of strength and support.
The activity also enables breaking the routine during chemotherapy. There is great sense of satisfaction once the activity is over. Patients' mood improves dramatically".
Patients response:
A': "During activity I forget all about my problems, the activity calms me down".
N': "I'm glad to be occupied with activity during therapy".
In addition the patients demonstrate repeated interest as to when the next activity will take place…
