17 Research Day 2020 Barzilai University Medical Center 7 IN VIVO AND IN VITRO COMPARISON OF SAF ROTARY FILES VS MANUAL INSTRUMENTATION FOR ROOT CANAL PREPARATION AND FILLING IN PRIMARY TEETH. Background Root canal treatments with K-files are the standard method in primary molars. SAF system is used with great success in permanent teeth. Objectives To evaluate the use of SAF in primary canals and to compare in vivo the SAF with K-files. Methods and materials In vitro 4 primary incisors were prepared with K-files and 4 with SAF, filled with iodoform paste, invested in epoxy resin, the root sliced horizontally, and observed under light microscope. Second primary molars were treated in a 3 years old girl using K-files or SAF system. Results K-files reshaped the original contour or the canals and caused cracks. The SAF system retained original contour and no dentinal cracks were observed. The iodoform based paste penetrated the dentin tubuli, deeper when the SAF system was used. The clinical case showed that the result of pulpectomy in primary molar using of the SAF system was similar to K-files. Conclusions The SAF system retained the original contour, no cracks were observed and the penetration of the iodoform paste into the dentin tubuli was better. Clinically the use of SAF in primary teeth can prevent cracks in the dentin and retain the original thickness of the dentin walls.
